Timing:
Sat 4:00 PM - Sat 5:00 PM
Location:
Stadium / Meeting Room 10
Long Description:
Join spiritual director, doctoral student, and Dungeon Master Pastor Rory Philstrom for a critical look at how religion is presented in most popular TTRPGs and fantasy storytelling, as well as a brief history of the use of religion as a justification for colonialism, dehumanization, subjugation, and massacre. We'll look at how common fantasy tropes and worldbuilding structures also encourage the practice of dehumanization of other intelligent and rational beings through the justification of their status as killable enemies. Finally, attendees will learn a better way to worldbuild religious traditions using a simple design framework for a fantasy religion that gives attendees an opportunity to engage in a post-colonial bottom-up look at religious forms that better capture the organic, fluid and dynamic reality of religion at a personal and social level.
